5 things we learned from ETS RD6 in Daun

0

After everybody has returned home after ETS RD6, we once again a lot of social media postings with many positive words and comments around the event. The four days at the Sporthotel Grafenwald had been amazing, very demanding, and also a great show of world class RC racing. Now, we are looking back onto the event and the “5 Things” we have learned from ETS RD6 in Daun.

1) Schumacher can not only win at Offroad races

Schumacher is one of the most iconic brands in RC racing. Being along in the industry since 1980, the company has won many international titles, national championships, and other big events. Michal Orlowski is their top driver right now and won multiple European championships and EOS titles in the last years. But one thing never happened until now: A win in the Modified class at the ETS. Michal Orlowski was in the A-Main many times and scored podium finishes as well, but ons single victory has so far eluded him.

As the Schumacher team never stopped working hard on their touring car programme, the time had finally come at the ETS season finale in Daun. Michal Orlowski was on fire and took the TQ and win in front of the ETS most successful driver Ronald Völker, and multiple IFMAR world champion Marc Rheinard. A great result for the British manufacturer and the team around Andy Murray. The crowd was cheering as Orlowski crossed the line in A3 on Sunday afternoon and Michal was celebrating with his father, Andy Murray, Mattia Collina, and almost everybody came to congratulate him for this epic race victory.
Let`s see if Schumacher can carry the great pace over into the new ETS season!

2) The TQ is a 89% chance to win the race

A mystery we have watched during the entire season. In Daun, ALL race winners started from first on the grid into the triple A-Mains. The pole position is very important at the ETS, as we saw 89% of drivers taking their wins from the TQ spot during the complete season.
But what does this mean? Is the competition not strong enough? For sure, this is not the fact! The competition at the ETS is at it`s highest level and drivers are just not making many mistakes when driving on track. Especially the top A-Main drivers are in a world of their own and it seems like a “classic overtake” has gotten very rare.

In only 4 out of 36 decisions, the TQ was not winning the race in the end. In the Orca 17.5 Stock class it was once Dominik Reile who got beaten by Kevin Schmid in Luxembourg, and Jasmin Donath was able to win in Andernach as pole sitter Alvaro Fernandez was not able to convert his TQ into a race win. In the Scorpion Formula class, it was René Kölbel who won the race in Hann. Münden from second on the grid in front of TQ Andreas Stiebler. And in the Matrix Modified class it was Yannic Prümper who found his way around TQ Ronald Völker at the season opener in Apeldoorn. All other races had been won by the top qualifier (TQ). Will this trend continue in the next season, or will we see more action on the front row of the grid again?

3) Awesomatix A800R already on the winning way

The new Awesomatix A800R was in use at the ETS season finale by a hand full of factory drivers. The car is not available for the market yet, but the request is already huge as the car features a lot of new things. The performance is also looking very strong so far. Simon Lauter took the Pro Stock win in Daun with the new A800R, with Lukas Ellerbrock also using the car to finish second on the podium – his best ETS result so far.
Marc Rheinard (3rd in Modified) had a good pace as well and the team will work hard to improve the A800R even more in the future. Whenever a new car is already at the same level compared to the old one at the first big race, it is clear that there is a lot more potential to unlock in the future which looks very bright for Awesomatix.

4) Giving presents is a lot of fun

During the ETS season finale, every racer who attended at least 5 or 6 races of the season received a special gift. It was a setup board with a personalized ETS sticker and the driver`s name on it. We like to thank everybody again for coming to so many of our races.

ToniSport was offering free cans of energy drinks, apple juice, and beer on Saturday afternoon. Every racer could pick up a free refreshment together with stickers, lighters, and pencils. A lot of drivers showed up to collect some of this stuff and it was a pleasure having a quick talk with everybody.

The “The Spirit of the Event” Award was given to a very sympathic group of racers who made their first trip to the ETS from Greece: Stam Kontouzoglou, Tasos Batas, Andreas Koutras, and Filippos Koutras. Thanks a lot for coming and we hope to see you again soon.

5) Sparbier and Mugen Seiki – a perfect fit!

Shortly before the start of the season finale in Daun, Sören Sparbier announced his departure from long term sponsor Serpent. The next announcement saw him teaming up with the Mugen Seiki team around Robert Pietsch and Ronald Völker. Sören was driving his Mugen cars for the first time in Daun and his results had been better than ever.
He was able to take the pole position in the Hobbywing FWD class and after winning A1 and A2 he celebrated his first ever win at  the ETS. A great drive from the young and very talented German driver from Hann. Münden. Sören was racing in the Pro Stock class as well, and after some real good qualifiers he started from fifth on the grid and was able to defend the position until the end to bring home his best Pro Stock result so far. It seems that Sören and Mugen already “clicked”, and we are looking forward to see him racing with his new team in the new season.

Matrix Modified

Völker is ETS champion while Orlowski takes first Modified win for Schumacher

A2 – The second A-Main of the Matrix Modified class saw Schumacher factory driver Michal Orlowski making a big mistake in the first lap after starting from pole position. He dropped down to the end of the field and Ronald Völker was leading the race with Marc Rheinard (Awesomatix A800R) in tow. Rheinard tried everything to stay on Völker’s tail, but after he had two very small bubbles, he just had no chance to come close enough to Völker. The Mugen Seiki driver took A2 in style which brought him into an even better position to win the overall championship in A3. Behind Völker and Rheinard, it was once again Christopher Krapp (Yokomo) finishing third with a strongly recovering Michal Orlowski in fourth position. With A2 going to Völker, Rheinard was in need to win A3 from third on the grid with a faster overall runtime compared to Völker`s A2 win – more that difficult!

A3 – The deciding A-Main of the Matrix Modified class was just awesome to watch. TQ Michal Orlowski had a good start, but so had the others. Ronald Völker and Marc Rheinard followed Orlowski very closely, and Völker was putting a lot of pressure on the white Schumacher car in front of him. However, Orlowski was standing his ground and made no mistakes at all. Under tremendous applause from all spectators, Orlowski took the win at the last race of the season and Ronald Völker defended his Modified title successfully – what a race it was!

Awesomatix ProStock

Lauter wins A2 to celebrate the championship in style

A2 – Simon Lauter took another dominant win in the Awesomatix Pro Stock class. This time, Lukas Ellerbrock was able to stay in striking distance to Lauter, but as Simon didn`t show any nerves it was simply impossible for Ellerbrock to ride a serious attack on his Awesomatix teammate. With 2 wins from 2 finals, Simon Lauter brought a perfect season to an even better ending here in Daun. Congratulations again for winning the highly rewarded ETS Pro Stock title. Oliver Krähemann, Patrick Danielsen, and Tim Benson completed the top 5 in A2. For champion Lauter, it was the fifteenth (!) consecutive ETS race with a podium finish – what a great performance from Simon!

A3 – The last A-Main of the Awesomatix Pro Stock class saw Lukas Ellerbrock taking the win. Simon Lauter was not on the line anymore after he had already won the race after A2. Ellerbrock was driving perfectly on the technical track here in Daun and behind him it was the show of Danielsen and Krähemann who had a nice race for second and third. Sören Sparbier took the fourth place in the last final, right in front of Olivier Bultynck.

He had another perfect race in front of Stefan Schulz, Meik Niemann, Roman Borschel, and Mark Valent to seal the deal.

A3 – The last A-Main of the Hobbywing Frontwheel class was in the hands of back-to-back champion Stefan Schulz. He won the race in front of Roman Borschel and Meik Niemann. Orca 17.5 Stock

Reile is champion after an amazing battle with Donath all season long

A2 – Dominik Reile took the win in the second A-Main and celebrated his win with his friends, teammates, and with all season rival Jasmin Donath. She was one of the first drivers to congratulate Reile which showed the great sportsmanship we have between most racers at the ETS. It was a season with ups and downs for Reile, but all the pressure was gone after A2, and he is a well-deserved champion. Jasmin Donath had an amazing season as well and is one of the most improving racers of the season. Congratulations to both drivers – you did an awesome job!

A3 – Jasmin Donath won the last A-Main of the season and secured her sixth consecutive ETS podium in the Orca 17.5 Stock class. The newly crowned vice champion drove without any mistake and took the win in front of Kevin Schmid and Roman Borschel while champion Dominik Reile was watching the race from the sideline.

ToniSport 40+ Masters

Stankowitz is your 40+ Masters champion and Zierold joins circle of ETS race winners

A2 – The second A-Main of the ToniSport 40+ Masters class saw Michel Zierlod winning his firet ETS race. Welcome to the circle of winners Michel. He was driving fantastic and clean, and second place runner Stankowitz had no chance to challenge him for the win. But as Stankowitz knew that a second place in A2 would guarantee him the overall championship, he was not going all in, and it paid off for him in the end. Zierold celebrated his big win after the final, and a very delighted Manuel Stankowitz was slowly recognizing what he has achieved this season. He is the new ToniSport 40+ Masters champion – congratulations Manuel Stankowitz.

A3 – In the last of the triple A-Mains, Manuel Stankowitz took an unchallenged win ahead of Andreas Myrberg and Caspar Morgen. Stankowitz drove like a real champion (which he now is), and brought a fantastic season to an end. The ToniSport 40+ Masters title is his biggest achievement in RC racing, and he is a well-deserved champion. Toni Mateo had not his best weekend but will still bring the vice champion trophy to Gran Canaria.

Scorpion Formula

Stiebler takes A3 and wins the big trophy in Daun

A2 – The second Formula A-Main saw the scene of the race in the very last chicane. Stiebler was leading all race long, but Kölbel never gave up and was all over Stiebler entering the last chicane before exiting onto the main straight. The rear of Stiebler`s Schumacher car got a little loose, and Kölbel quickly found his nose in the left side of Stiebler`s rear wing which caused Stiebler`s car to flip. Kölbel continued and took the win from Stiebler. As it was a very controversial situation, the ETS race directors around Scotty Ernst reviewed it multiple times on the video and decided to handle it as a “racing incident”. This meant that the title decision got shifted all the way to the last A-Main of the season in Daun!

A3 – Andreas Stiebler and René Kölbel had to face a lot of pressure in the deciding third Formula A-Main. The whole season was on the line in a 5-minute race, and both had a great race on track. Stiebler made no bigger mistakes, and Kölbel was chasing him hard around the track at the Sporthotel Grafenwald. After five minutes, Stiebler crossed the line, and the crowd was applauding both drivers for an awesome race. After an epic season and a thrilling battle, the championship title goes to Andreas Stiebler. René Kölbel finished the season in second place and both drivers are already looking forward to race again in the new season!

ETS A1 Report RD6 Season #15 2022/23

0

The first round of Finals was scheduled for Saturday evening, and all drivers looked forward to start from the grid “on the sound of the tone”. The A-Mains had been spectacular to watch and in this report you will find all the information about the races!

Matrix Modified

Orlowski wins A1 in front of hard pushing Volker as Rheinard flew off the track

In the first Matrix Modified A-Main, we saw Michal Orlowski with a perfect start off the line. He was leading for the entire race and was able to hold off Ronald Völker, who was absolutely pushing his car to the limit to set him under pressure. But Orlowski stayed calm, and made no mistakes until he crossed the finish line.
Marc Rheinard was also in the mix during the first half of the race, where he was driving in third place with his Orca powered Awesomatix A800R. Reinhard’s goal was to attack Völker in front of him for the overall championship. At the 2:30 minute mark, Rheinard was riding the curb in the fast left hander of the left track section a little too much, and his car flew into the fence. His race was done!

Behind A1 winner Orlowski and second placed Völker, it was the Yokomo duo of Christopher Krapp and Yannic Prümper earning P3 and P4 while Lucas Urbain finished fifth. A1 was a big break for Orlowski in case of winning the event, and a very good result for Völker in direction championship title. Rheinard needs to get by Völker in both of tomorrows remaining finals to keep his championship chances alive!

Awesomatix ProStock

Lauter wins A1 like a real champion

In the Awesomatix Pro Stock class, Simon Lauter never looked back after the sound of the tone. He had everything under control and drove to an unchallenged win in front of a strong teammate Lukas Ellerbrock. Oliver Krähemann, Patrick Danielsen, and Sören Sparbier finished in the same order they started and took positions 3 to 5. A great run from the back-to-back ETS champion Simon Lauter which once again showed that he is the dominant force of the Pro Stock class at the ETS.

Hobbywing Frontwheel

Masterclass from Sparbier in the first FWD A-Main

Hobbywing Frontwheel TQ Sören Sparbier won his first A-Main in his ETS racing career here in Daun. He started from pole position and converted it into a very impressive win. ETS champion Stefan Schulz was all over him in the early stages of the race until he had to stop his car after a driving mistake which ended in a crash. After Schulz had disappeared from the rear-view mirror of Sparbier`s Mugen Seiki car, it was Awesomatix driver Roman Borschel who was closing in on Sparbier. But Sören Sparbier showed strong nerves, made no mistakes, and brought home an important win in the first A-Main under the applause of the audience! Roman Borschel, Meik Niemann, Henrik Heitsch, and Nicolas Delisé rounded out the top 5 on Saturday evening!

Orca 17.5 Stock

Perfect drive from Reile in first 17.5 Stock A-Main

Dominik Reile showed that he still can convert pole positions into race wins. After having several bad runs from the pole position during the season, he found his winning attitude again and brought the day to a perfect ending with winning the first Orca 17.5 Stock A-Main. Reiles championship rival Jasmin Donath also showed an amazingly clean race and crossed the line only 0.270 seconds behind Reile. What a clinic drive from these two amazing drivers out front. The gap to third placed Roman Borschel was about 4 seconds which shows the extra class of Reile and Donath in A1. Henrik Heitsch drove from 6 to 4, and Kevin Schmid finished fifth.

Everything looks really good for Dominik Reile now, but he needs another brilliant run on Sunday to receive the big trophy from Scotty and Uwe. Jasmin Donath will try everything she can to fight back on Sunday and she has shown that the pace is there. It is game on in the Orca 17.5 Stock class!

ToniSport 40+ Masters

No mistakes from Zierold as he takes A1 from Stankowitz and Morgen

Pole sitter Michel Zierold is still on a high here at the ETS season finale in Daun. He won the first A-Main with a defensive driving (because of the overall championship) Manuel Stankowitz in tow. Andreas Myrberg had a traction roll in the early stages of the run and dropped all the way down to the end of the pack, while Torsten Baggendorf and Ulrich Dinger finished fourth and fifth behind third placed Caspar Morgen.
Manuel Stankowitz is only one A-Main away from becoming ETS champion in the 40+ Masters class, he just needs to finish ahead of Toni Mateo one more time. Sunday morning will tell us more about this story!

Scorpion Formula

Hard pushing Kölbel found no way to attack Stiebler in A1

The first A-Main of the Scorpion Formula class was a two-horse race between Andreas Stiebler and René Kölbel. Both had a very clean race, and no matter how hard Kölbel was pushing, there was no chance to come close enough to Andreas Stiebler. A big break for the Schumacher driver Stiebler who would become ETS champion if he can repeat this result just one more time on Sunday. Gergö Valent and Herbert Weber continued with the nice fight they had all weekend long and finished right behind Stiebler and Kölbel in third and fourth position.

Congratulations for a well-deserved title defence goes out to Simon Lauter and the whole Awesomatix team.
But now back to the current racing action: Lauter will start from pole position and will see a very quick Lukas Ellerbrock right behind him. Krähemann was also on a very strong pace all weekend long and will be in full attack mode here in Daun. Behind the Awesomatix trio, Patrick Danielsen (Xray) and Sören Sparbier (Mugen Seiki) are completing the top 5 on the grid. We are looking forward to some amazing racing action in the triple A-Mains between the champion Lauter and all his competitors!

Hobbywing Frontwheel

Sparbier seals first FWD TQ for Mugen Seiki

Sören Sparbier posted another TQ run in the last round of Hobbywing Frontwheel qualifying and took the pole position away from Stefan Schulz in the very last minute. A great debut for Sören Sparbier who is running Mugen Seiki cars here in Daun for the first time. It was a super close race and Sparbier was slowly closing in on the Xray car of Schulz who was running in front of him. Stefan Schulz showed great sportsmanship with opening up a small gap to allow Sparbier going by. Thats how its done at the highest level of rc racing! After finishing second in this heat, Stefan Schulz (Xray) will line up directly behind Sparbier, with a very quick Roman Borschel (Awesomatix) in third place.
After Steven Olsen was sadly not able to make the A-Main, nobody can take the title away from Stefan Schulz anymore, and he can celebrate the season win with a nice trophy on Sunday. But before spraying champagne, we are looking forward to some great races in the Hobbywing Frontwheel class at the ETS season finale!

TQ Sören Sparbier (DE) Mugen Seiki
2. Stefan Schulz (DE) Xray
