Controlled Practice Report, ETS RD4 Season #16 2023/24

Matrix Modified

The seeding practice of the Matrix Modified class saw Lucas Urbain (Awesomatix) on top of the board. Lucas improved his pace a lot throughout all practice sessions and had a comfortable looking gap of almost three tenths of a seconds over the rest of the field.
Behind Urbain, it was as close as you cannot imagine. With only half a second between P2 and P10, the fight for the spots of the A-Main starting grid will be very intense in qualifying. Jan Ratheisky was driving super-fast and will start from second place, followed by the Yokomo of Yannic Prümper, Mugen Seiki`s Ronald Völker, and Awesomatix Marc Rheinard.

Free Practice Report, ETS RD4 Season #16 2023/24

The carpet season of ETS Season #16 2023/24 is underway. The 270 participants had six rounds of controlled practice today to get used to the fantastic, flowing, and fast track layout in the sports hall of the Transworld Hotel Auefeld.
The traction came up quickly and lap times dropped down a lot from the first heat in the morning to the last heat in the evening. Tomorrow morning will be a short open practice for all drivers who missed Thursday practice, followed by another round of free practice and two more rounds of seeding practice. The first round of qualifying is scheduled for Friday afternoon and will be the first real showdown of the weekend!

Matrix Modified

The top 5 finished the day within two tenths of a second on a fast and flowing track

The Matrix Modified was really fast on the flowing track layout. The laptimes dropped a lot during the day and it was Mugen Seiki`s lead driver Ronald Völker who was on top of the board at the end of the day. Yannic Prümper was second fastest for Yokomo and Marc Rheinard took third place for Awesomatix. It was very tight at the front with the top 5 in about two tenths of a second.

With the top 15 drivers all in one second (!) over three consecutive laps, we can expect the closest qualifying since a long time as the track leads everybody to push very hard. Seeding practice will follow on Friday after one more round of free practice and the first round of qualifying will also take place in the evening!

The Top 5 after Thursday practice (3 consecutive laps)

1. Ronald Völker (DE) 36.981 Mugen Seiki|LRP
2. Yannic Prümper (DE) 37.051 Yokomo|Orca
3. Marc Rheinard (DE) 37.055 Awesomatix|Orca

Awesomatix ProStock

Local hero Sparbier shows his pure speed

In the Awesomatix ProStock class, it was Hann. Münden`s fastest racer Sören Sparbier (Mugen Seiki) who found himself on top of the board as the day came to an end. Sparbier was quicker as second placed and third placed. A great show of performance from Sparbier, BUT as he will only be able to run 2 out of 4 qualifiers this weekend due to work commitments, he will have a monster job to do on track to maintain his position.

Olivier Bultynck, the current championship leader, improved his pace round by round and found himself in a strong second place at the end of the day, right ahead of his Awesomatix team mate Lukas Ellerbrock. Who will be the fastest in qualifying? We will find out on Friday after seeding practice!

The Top 5 after Thursday practice (3 consecutive laps)

1. Sören Sparbier (DE) 39.404 Mugen Seiki
2. Olivier Bultynck (BE) 39.714 Awesomatix
3. Lukas Ellerbrock (DE) 39.796 Awesomatix
4. Tim Benson (DE) 39.830 Jambo One
5. Jan Ratheisky (DE) 40.039 Xray

Hobbywing Frontwheel

Will Hann. Münden pave the way to the title for Izsay?

For current championship leader Adam Izsay, this weekend`s race at the Transworld Hotel can be a defining one into direction overall ETS FWD championship (which would be the third in a row for Xray). Adam is some good points ahead of his competitors and another top 3 finish (or a win) would hand him all aces before the last two remaining encounters of season #16.

Adam was the fastest here on Thursday and his advantage over second placed Jonas Völker (Mugen Seiki) was at 0.3 seconds over the fastest three consecutive laps. The top qualifier of ETS RD3, Henrik Heitsch (ARC), finished third for the day while Adam Southgate and Andy Kühne also showing a great speed taking fourth and fifth overall.

1up Racing 40+ Masters

Morgen setting the pace after coming back to the ETS

Caspar Morgen from Denmark ended his first day on a high as he topped the time sheets in the last run of the day. After not racing at the last 4 or 5 ETS races, he was immediately on pace with his Xray car and was followed closely by Torsten Baggendorf (ARC) and reigning champion Manuel Stankowitz (Iris). The very experienced carpet specialist Joachim Altenhof took fourth place for the day with ETS RD1 winner René Kölbel in fifth position.

The Top 5 after Thursday practice (3 consecutive laps)

1. Caspar Morgen (DK) 42.778 Xray
2. Torsten Baggendorf (DE) 42.790 ARC
3. Manuel Stankowitz (DE) 42.892 Iris

Ehrbar leads Formula class after day 1 in Germany

Xray driver David Ehrbar had a great start into ETS RD4 after winning the last race of the outdoor season in Andernach two months ago. Ehrbar posted the fastest three consecutive laps of the day in the fifth round of practice and was a tenth faster as his rivals Andreas Stiebler and Jan Ratheisky in second and third. The top five had been on a very similar pace all day and qualifying will be a close affair here at the Transworld Hotel.

The Top 5 after Thursday practice (3 consecutive laps)

1. David Ehrbar (DE) 41.118 Xray
2. Andreas Stiebler (AT) 41.216 Schumacher

ETS circus traveling to Hann. Münden to start into carpet season!

Preview ETS RD4 Hann. Münden, GER

The time has come: It is carpet season!
With some big races like the TOS in Augsburg, Longwy Winter Series RD1, and the EWS International already in the books, it is about the ETS to roll out the carpet for the first of three indoor races in Season #16 2023/24. With 270 entries, we have reached exactly the same number of racers we had last year at the same venue. The Transworld Hotel Auefeld is prepared for two great events (EOS directly after the ETS) and we can`t wait to get the show startet with free practice on Thursday!

Matrix Modified (31 Entries)

Who will close the gap to “Hidden Leader” Orlowski? Can Völker repeat his win from 2022?

The Matrix Modified class will see the top dogs trying to close the invisible gap to Schumacher`s Michal Orlowski who will race Offroad at the Florida Carpet Champs this weekend. Orlowski is currently not on top of the leaderboard, but with his two TQs and two race wins, he is in the best position to win the championship if he can continue like this in Daun (RD5) and Wiener Neustadt (RD6).
While Orlowski will race his Schumacher Buggys in the USA, it is all about Marc Rheinard (Awesomatix), Ronald Völker (Mugen Seiki) and Eric Dankel (Mugen Seiki) to score the best possible results in Hann. Münden to keep their championship hopes alive. They need to create some serious pressure (points wise) on Orlowski to maybe to let him struggle in Daun.
In the weeks before ETS RD4, Ronald Völker won the TOS race in Augsburg ahead of Marc Rheinard and finished second at the EWS race and in Longwy. Eric Dankel scored a fourth place at the TOS in Augsburg.
Beside the top 3 of the championship, we can expect Awesomatix driver Lucas Urbain to be a contender for the win in Hann. Münden. He won the race in Longwy ahead of Völker and also set the TQ at the EWS past weekend. Some tough luck in the finals saw him dropping down to P4 in the end but Lucas showed a great pace and was also strong at last year`s ETS race in the Transworld Hotel. Michele Manzo and Simon Lauter are completing the strong team of Awesomatix Modified drivers for the upcoming weekend.
The Yokomo team with Christopher Krapp and Yannic Prümper is also pushing their limits. Krapp was testing a lot and Prümper was able to win the TOS race in Hasloh (nothern Germany) in front of Marc Rheinard some weeks ago. Jan Ratheisky, Patrick Gollner, and Stefan Schulz are once again the hot irons in the game for Xray.

Forecast of the ETS Reporter: Urbain, Rheinard, and Völker with the best podium chances in the Modified class!

Awesomatix Pro Stock (28 Entries)

Bultynck, Ellerbrock, and Izsay – the top 3 are going for it at the Transworld Hotel

The Awesomatix Pro Stock class will see the top three drivers of the actual championship batteling it out once more. We have seen great racing between Lukas Ellerbrock, Adam Izsay, and Olivier Bultynck this season and everybody was able to win at least one race on asphalt. Lukas Ellerbrock (Awesomatix) has already won the TOS in Hasloh ahead of Adam Izsay (Xray). Izsay himself has done a lot of testing at the famous Hudy Arena including a victory at the XRS race.

Championship leader Olivier Bultynck has thrown a few smokescreens with not attending any of the bigger races in the alst weeks. It will be interesting to see who will be on the best pace when our event in Hann. Münden will start. It is game on in the Awesomatix Pro Stock class

Forecast of the ETS Reporter: Izsay and Ellerbrock with the best shot for the win while the performance of Bultynck is hard to predict!

Hobbywing Frontwheel (71 Entries)

Izsay and Weffers can cement their positions at ETS RD4

To be honest, the championship fight in the FWD class is not the most thrilling one right now. Adam Izsay (Xray) has a very comfortable lead and if he will finish in the top 5 at the next races, the championship will be his. Izsay was the only driver to finish on the podium at every race of the season and he won two of them. His gap to second placed Max Weffers very big at 13 points at the moment. Max Weffers (Mugen Seiki) had a great start into the season and is sitting in second place of the championship now. His advantage over third placed Andy Murray is already at 9 points and Murray is not racing this weekend.

A driver who could tip the scales is Roman Borschel. He attended only two of the three races until now and therefore he is not ranked very high in the standings. But with his win at RD3 in Andernach he could be the driver to fight with Izsay for the title on carpet. Borschel has won the race at the Transworld Hotel last season, and when he will start a winning streak now he can maybe challenge Izsay and the others on top of the Hobbywing Frontwheel class.

Forecast of the ETS Reporter: Borschel will challenge Izsay hard for the win, Myrberg can be a factor as well with the new Iris FWD car!

1up Racing 40+ Masters (45 Entries)

All eyes on championship leader Thalheimer as the “Masters Class” hits Hann. Münden

Xray racer Mirco Thalheimer was the man of the season so far. He was able to claim his first ever ETS race win during RD3 at Arena33, and he is leading the championship by 7 points from his two Austrian competitors René Kölbel (Xay) and Werner Schmitzer (Xray). Thalheimer was on the podium at every race this season and is in a well-deserved first position of the ranking list when he will start his journey to Hann. Münden.

Behind Thalheimer, Kölbel, and Schmitzer, we have Michel Zierold (Awesomatix) sitting in fourth place. He is a real strong carpet racer and many people expect him to be the hardest rival for Thalheimer in the remaining three carpet races. Zierold was able to win the second race of the season in Aigen (Austria) and his 7-point deficit only comes from his imperfect start into the season at RD1 in the Netherlands.

Forecast of the ETS Reporter: Zierold will set the pace, followed by Thalheimer and Mateo!

[the_ad_group id=”141″]

Orca 21.5 Stock (44 Entries)

Can Bergheim continue his triumph on carpet

For Awesomatix driver Tristan Bergheim, the current season is running smooth and perfect. He already won two times (Apeldoorn and Andernach) and finished third at RD2 in Aigen. He is leading the championship of the Orca 21.5 Stock class by 11 points from Mugen Seiki`s Timo Siebert and Emeiy Ratheisky.

Young Phil Langner will be a driver to watch in Hann. Münden as he recently won the TOS race in Hasloh in front of Tristan Bergheim and routinier Torsten Baggendorf. Phil Langner stepped onto the big stage of the ETS with a stellar drive to second overall in Aigen, followed by a third place at Arena33. Another top 3 finish would move him into the top 4 of the championship.
Timo Siebert and Tobias Baumbach are two more names which we can expect to aim for a top result in Hann. Münden together with many others who we are not able to rate properly now!

Forecast of the ETS Reporter: Three horse race for the win between Langner, Bergheim, and one surprisingly fast other driver!

ToniSport Formula (34 Enteries)

Everybody to hunt down championship leader Stiebler

Andreas Stiebler (Schumacher) has already scored two race wins this season (Apeldoorn and Aigen). With his worst result being a second place in Andernach, he has the best chances to defend his current ETS championship title. David Ehrbar finished the outdoor season on a high with his win at Arena33, while one of the most successful Formula racers in the history of the ETS, Jan Ratheisky (Xray), is still waiting for his first victory of the season. However, if anyone wants to close up to Stiebler in the rankings, it is time to start the hunt now.

Forecast of the ETS Reporter: Ratheisky will jump onto the championship train with a possible win ahead of Stiebler and Kölbel!

ETS Beginners Guide, Part 2 – The reason behind handout Motors and RPM limiters?

The second part of our Beginner’s Guide is all about the electronics we are using at the ETS. If you do not know anything about the ETS electronics so far, this article will lighten your candle for sure.

To provide the same chances to everybody on the motor side, the ETS is running handout motors in all stock classes since many years. To make it a perfect fit, only one ESC is allowed in any class. Racer`s can buy their own ESC and use it at all races, but there is also the possibility to rent a speedo for a single event.

Which classes are using handout Motors, and why!

The Matrix Modified class is not content of this article as the modified racers can choose any speed controller (ESC) and Motor they want to use. There are no limitations, and everybody can select and adjust his power according to the track and his personal preferences. It sounds easy – and that`s what it is.

The stock classes are different. Every stock class driver will pick up a motor from the ETS motor pool at every ETS event. This always happens during free practice on Thursday as the handout motors need to be in the cars at latest for the start of seeding practice. The motors are marked by numbers, and after the race everybody returns his motor. A well-oiled system that was never in need of changes since many years.

All other ETS racing classes are using handout motors, and a special ESC which is updated with a special ETS software. The front wheel drive class (FWD), and the Formula 1 class are using ESC`s and motors from Hobbywing, while all stock touring car classes (Pro Stock, 40+ Masters, and 21.5 Stock) are powered by ORCA equipment.

The reason behind these handout motors and special ETS speed controllers is easy to explain. The goal of the organizers is to create even racing with equal chances for everybody on track without being dependent on the quality of the motor. In all “Open Brushless” stock classes, people must invest a lot of time and money to select the strongest motor with the highest torque and rpm. The testing is intense as everybody wants to find the perfect speedo settings and end bell adjusting on their equipment. It is not uncommon that motors and ESC`s are bursting into flames during this process. In our opinion, this is not true “stock racing”, it is almost modified!

The ETS is different and puts kind of a “performance cap” on everything. For sure not every motor is the same, but the RPM limiter in the ESC software is adjusted to a value of rpm which is making sure nobody can use the advantage of a 2-3% stronger handout motor. All top speeds are even and the only thing the driver can do is driving perfect lines, carrying good cornerspeed, and having a strong and powerful battery in his car together with a maximum free drivetrain. The RPM limiter has brought the maximum equalness to the ETS in the last years and is the perfect solution for true and fair stock racing!

Pro Tipp: Take care about your drivetrain. If it spins super free, you will have a benefit above others on track in all ETS stock classes. CHeck your bearings, the belts, and the belt tension and you will be fine!

Another factor which is limited by the ETS rules is the maximum gearing in the cars. It is possible to change speedo settings with a programming device, but we also have removed many unnecessary settings from the software to make it as easy as possible to handle them.

Pro Tipp: Don`t care too much about your ESC settings. As long as you are using the correct software version (with the correct RPM limiter), just invest some time to adjust the brake punch and the drag brake (mostly set to zero) to your likings and just drive it!

Does it make sense to practice with ETS equipment?

Simple answer: YES!
Most ETS racers are practicing with the equipment they must run at the ETS. That means that most of them have bought a Motor for their own use to be as close as possible to ETS conditions. At the races of the ToniSport Onroad Series in Germany, the rules are almost the same as at the ETS which makes it even more easy to attend all these events with the same ESC, gearing, and motor power.

Pro Tipp: If you are planning to race at the ETS more frequently, get yourself a complete motor and ESC combo and practice with this equipment as much as you can!

We hope this little insight about the ETS motors and speed controllers had been helpful and interesting for you. The next article will follow soon and the topic will be something about the race tires of the Euro Touring Series!
